Grade 2 Teaching Insights
I have learned a lot about grade 2 classes from several sources. The curriculum gives teachers hundreds of detailed specific expectations, for example, learn to record tabulations by hand and learn to use a Venn diagram. (Math Curriculum) (Lynne’s Worksheets #12 and #13).
I visualize these expectations as a field of checkboxes. A teacher tries to tick off as many as possible, but their numbers and range are so vast they can never all be covered. Every day is a race. Having great learning resources is important but having learning resources that help win that race is also important.
Critterlearning picturebooks provide both. For example, they can be used to meet aspects of the language stream while also meeting aspects of the science stream (Life Systems) and the math stream (computer use and online exploration).
Lynne is developing more critter-based classroom resources that she will post on teacherspayteachers.ca Other teachers can also do that. The dual format of write-in and fill-in is an essential element. Few current offerings have that, so the slate is clean.
The combination of paper and digital resources will help in classrooms where computers are scarce. Because our paper and digital formats mimic each other, learners can share computers by switching back and forth between the two formats without losing momentum.
This combination can also help learners transition from paper to computers over the academic year.
